Egy nagyon szép, régi katalán szokás felelevenítésével, könyv és virág kölcsönös ajándékozásának gesztusával idén április 24-én nyitja meg kapuit a Budapesti Nemzetközi Könyvfesztivál. Az immár huszonegyedik alkalommal megnyíló könyves seregszemle díszvendége az északi irodalom egyik üstökösként feltűnt sztárja, a finn Sofi Oksanen, akinek ez alkalomból jelenik meg magyar nyelven a Mikor eltűntek a galambok című legfrissebb regénye, illetve Törökország, ahonnan ez alkalomból 12 jeles török író érkezik Budapestre. Ez a hatalmas, Európa és Ázsia határán fekvő ország 150 négyzetméter alapterületű reprezentatív standon mutatja be könyvkultúráját a nagyközönségnek.
A könyvfesztiválon 34 ország képviselteti magát, 64 külföldi író látogat el hozzánk, közülük 18 fiatal szerző az Európai Elsőkönyvesek Fesztiváljára, amely tizennegyedik alkalommal látja vendégül a kontinens legtehetségesebb prózaíróit. A könyvfesztivál közismert, kedvelt sajátossága az író és olvasó személyes találkozása, a régi és az új könyvek ajánlása, dedikálása. A fesztivál három és fél napja alatt 446 magyar író fogja dedikálni műveit az olvasóinak. A rendezvény nem csupán irodalmi esemény, a több mint félezer kiállító többsége – köztük a határon túli magyar nyelvű kiadók – a szépirodalmi művek mellett tudományos és szakkönyveket, lexikonokat és szótárakat, CD-ket és e-könyveket, tankönyveket és segédkönyveket is kínálnak az érdeklődők figyelmébe.
A Millenáris – eltérően az európai könyvvásárok gyakorlatától – nagy nemzetközi könyvesboltként üzemel a fesztivál ideje alatt. A csarnokokban és a csarnokok előtti parkban felállított több mint félezer standon nem csak megtekinthetőek, hanem meg is vásárolhatóak a kiállított kötetek, ráadásul a legtöbb kiállító, a vásárra való tekintettel, kedvezményesen kínálja megvételre könyveit. This year, on April 24th, in a revival of a lovely Catalan tradition, each book will be accompanied by a flower, a gesture signaling not only our steadfast devotion to the written word, but also the opening of the 21st Budapest International Book Festival's doors. The guest of honor for this year's gathering of books is none other than Sofi Oksanen, a brilliant comet streaking across the northern skies of contemporary Finnish literature. This occasion is fittingly marked by the publication of her most recent novel, When the Doves Disappeared, available for the first time in Hungarian. Similarly, Budapest also welcomes the presence of twelve eminent Turkish authors, here to represent Turkey, the Book Festival's featured guest nation. An enormous country spanning the border between Europe and Asia, Turkey will showcase its literary heritage at a stall comprising 150 m² of the festival's area.
A total of thirty-four nations and sixty-four authors will be arriving from around the world to participate in this year's International Book Festival; eighteen of these authors will appear in the European Festival for First-Volume Authors, an event held for the fourteenth time in recognition of Europe's newest prose talents. Book-signings offer a popular opportunity for readers to meet with their favorite authors, while also receiving a personal dedication in either old or new volumes: during the festival's three-and-a-half days, 446 Hungarian authors will be available to sign their works for readers. Far more than an ordinary literary event, the Book Festival's over five hundred exhibitors—naturally including Hungarian publishers from beyond the Carpathian Basin—present visitors the opportunity to familiarize themselves with a variety of non-literary works, including non-fiction, scientific and technical volumes, encyclopedias, dictionaries, CDs, e-books, textbooks and handbooks as well.
Contrary to most European book fairs, the International Book Festival marks a time when the Millennium Park operates as an enormous, international bookshop: not only can guests browse through the wares on display at over 500 stands found either within the building's halls, or in its park outside, they may also purchase any product that catches their fancy—and at reduced price, for the majority of exhibitors mark this festive occasion by lowering prices. I therefore urge and invite you, Dear Reader, to take advantage of this unique opportunity and pay a visit to the 21st Budapest International Book Festival at the Millennium Park, from April 24th-April 27th. Bring your friends, family, relatives and loved ones to spend an unforgettable day browsing through a fantastic selection of works!
